The Line

Three Product Classes, Each Declared Dangerous Goods

Compressed natural gas, ignition materials and charcoal all travel as declared dangerous goods, and the declaration is the first line of each specification.

The Grade

Charcoal Graded To EN 1860-2

Barbecue charcoal is graded to EN 1860-2 on fixed carbon, ash, moisture and granulation. Each lot is bought and sold on its certificate of analysis, read against the standard.

Carriage

Charcoal Ships Declared As UN 1361

Since 1 January 2026 the IMDG Code requires every charcoal cargo to ship declared as UN 1361, Class 4.2.

Weathered First

Unpacked charcoal rests under cover in open air for at least 14 days after production before it is bagged.

Packed Cool

Nothing is packed warmer than 40 degrees Celsius on the day of packing.

Dated On The Document

The weathering report carries the production date, the packing date and the packing-day temperature.

Provenance

Certificates Of Origin, Verified

Charcoal of Somali origin is under a UN Security Council import ban, whatever origin the cargo claims. Every certificate of origin is verified with the issuing chamber, through the ICC verification tool where the issuer participates and against the vessel's own history where it does not.

Compressed Natural Gas

Sold By Energy Content

CNG is a regional product that moves by road and changes hands at a meter: UN 1971, Class 2.1, carried in inspected pressure equipment and sold by energy content through type-approved meters.

Ignition Materials

Declared, Packed And Papered

Matches are Class 4.1 flammable solids and gas lighters are Class 2.1, each with its own UN entry and packing rules. Ignition materials are quoted with the dangerous-goods declaration and the maker's test records in the same file as the price.
